Sometime while we were in college, my friend Eric began sending out e-mail letters to a group of friends. These letters contained extremely well written messages about various issues that affect us all -- from poverty to health care policy to the environment and more. For each of these e-mail letters, Eric researched the issues carefully and extensively. But most importantly, these e-mails called for action. Often in the form of calls to contact Congressional representatives and other government officials, these letters insisted that we, the people of our country and of the world, had the power and the responsibility to make the world a better place. A few years later, these messages became an e-mail list, appropriately called, "Better World." And Eric continues to send out messages to this list, informing us recipients of various issues that often fall by the wayside of governmental attention. While the list has grown over time through the direct contact that Eric has made with his peers, I have always felt that his careful work and deeply affecting prose should be available to more people. Now is the time that I have an opportunity to provide a space for Eric's letters. I have set up an archive of his e-mails here so that they will remain accessible to anyone on the Internet. Although some of these e-mails are time-sensitive and focused on specific actions, the research that Eric has put in to describing these issues is invaluable. The work he has done will continue to be useful for all of us considering how we can participate in shaping policies that will affect our lives. I end this introductory note with the signature quote that Eric attaches to all of his e-mails. It is from the visionary leader, Yitzhak Rabin. He said, "I have only dreams: to build a better world, a world of harmony and understanding, a world in which it is a joy to live. This is not asking for too much." Indeed.
