Dear All,
I just wanted to let you know that the letter calling for an
additional $1.2 billion in emergency supplemental funding for the global
HIV/AIDS crisis has not yet been sent to President Bush. The original
signers of the letter decided to give their fellow Congresspeople more
time to sign. To the best of my understanding, it is likely that the
letter will be sent soon, probably before Thanksgiving.
So far, more than 70 Representatives, along with at least 8 Senators,
have signed the letter. This is important progress, but it means that
more than 350 Representatives and perhaps more than 90 Senators have yet
to sign. These are all Congresspeople who need to have their constituents
urge them to sign the letter. I am attaching a recent list of signatories
below. If your Representative or Senator has not signed, your voice could
make a difference. A call or fax to him/her would be most useful.
If you call, you can simply tell whomever answers the phone that you
would like to speak with the aide who deals with the global HIV/AIDS
crisis. You could then explain to that aide (or the person who answers
the phone, if they question you further) that you think it is very
important that your Congressperson sign the letter to President Bush
asking him to request from Congress $1.2 billion in emergency supplemental
funding for the global HIV/AIDS crisis. The letter is being circulated by
Senator Patrick Leahy and Representative Barbara Lee. The aide will
probably then thank you and tell you that they will pass along the
message. It would also be useful to ask whether your Congressperson plans
on signing the letter, to further show your interest and concern.
Phone numbers (and e-mail addresses and your Congresspeople's web
sites, which should have their fax numbers) are available through
http://www.visi.com/juan/congress/. You can also call the Congressional
switchboard at (202) 224-3121. If you would rather not call or fax, you
can send an e-mail.
Without additional resources to fight it, the scourge of HIV/AIDS will
persist. Tens of millions more people will die. Older generations will
continue to suffer the distinct horror of knowing how terribly sick their
society is, for they are outliving their children. And the younger
generations will have to survive in such societies, and try to heal them,
even as the foundations of their societies -- their parents and teachers
among them -- crumble.
With assistance from without and change from within, this destruction
can be slowed and stopped. Please act as soon as possible, and encourage
friends, family, and colleagues to act as well. Thank you.
Peace,
Eric
